Montefiore è la capitale medioevale della Valle del Conca e uno dei paesi della Signoria dei Malatesta più integri e affascinanti.
Non a caso Montefiore rientra nel prestigioso circuito dei "Borghi più belli d'Italia".
La Rocca, come sentinella di pietra delle terre malatestiane, offre, con le sue geometrie severe e imponenti, scorci davvero unici. Sorge su un promontorio dove, nelle giornate serene lo sguardo abbraccia la costa da Fano a Ravenna.
 

In seguito alle ricerche archeologiche iniziate nell'estate del 2006 sono state ricavate interessanti scoperte che hanno permesso di aggiornare il rapporto tra il sito e le fonti storiche, in base alle quali si riteneva che il castello fosse sorto intorno al 1337 per iniziativa di Malatesta Guastafamiglia (1299 c.-1364). È certo che nel 1347 la rocca dovesse essere già costruita e funzionante, tanto da ospitare in quell'anno il re e la regina d'Ungheria. Il castello rimase poi sotto il dominio dei Malatesta fino al 1458, quando l'anno seguente venne occupato da Federico di Montefeltro.Nato con funzioni esclusivamente difensive, il Castrum Montis Floris fu ampliato in funzione di residenza intorno alla prima metà del '300 e successivamente ristrutturato e abbellito da Sigismondo Pandolfo nei primi decenni del XV secolo. Le successive vicende del castello sono molto complesse, soprattutto per quanto riguarda il controllo politico del centro, che nei secoli XV-XVI fu oggetto di passaggi di potere quasi continui.

La recente campagna di restauro, condotta da parte della Soprintendenza per i beni architettonici e per il paesaggio di Ravenna, in collaborazione con la Soprintendenza per i beni archeologici dell'Emilia Romagna e con il Comune di Montefiore, ha svolto lavori di consolidamento dell'intera struttura e ha riportato il complesso monumentale ad una totale fruizione, permettendo di accedere anche agli ambienti antichi, prima non raggiungibili. Nel vano in cui ti trovi e in quello successivo, per svolgere gli scavi archeologi, si è proceduto alla rimozione del pavimento. Conseguentemente, l'attività di scavo ha messo in luce un insieme di strutture legate alle fasi più antiche di frequentazione della rocca.
Le ricerche archeologiche hanno riportato alla luce una notevole quantità di reperti, spesso ottimamente conservati. Alcuni boccali costituiscono testimonianza delle più antiche maioliche smaltate dell'Italia centro-settentrionale, cui si aggiungono le maioliche quattrocentesche, e quelle cinquecentesche di produzione pesarese e faentina. Numerosissimi i vetri, per lo più bicchieri e bottiglie di produzione veneta. Non mancano le monete; gli attrezzi da lavoro; le armi; ma anche oggetti più prestigiosi, come un sigillo in bronzo.
La varietà e la quantità dei materiali rinvenuti offrono uno spaccato sociale della vita del castello, nelle sue numerose sfaccettature: la quotidianità, la vita di corte, i mestieri, l'attività militare.

I restauri hanno permesso di accedere anche ad ambienti fino ad ora non fruibili dal pubblico, come ad esempio la Sala dell'Imperatore dove sono conservate pitture laiche datate circa un decennio dopo la metà del Trecento, attribuite al pittore bolognese Jacopo Avanzi. Altri frammenti delle sue pitture sono esposte nella sala e del Trono.
E' possibile osservare anche parte dell'originaria copertura del castello, un tetto a doppia falda e percorrere le strette e lunghe scale che percorrono da cima a fondo l'edificio.

Montefiore was the medieval capital of the Conca Valley and one of the most integral and fascinating lands of the Malatesta Lords. 
Not by chance, Montefiore is part of the prestigious circuit of the “Most beautiful townships in Italy”. 
The Fortress, as a sentinel of stone in the Malatesta lands, offers, with it severe and imposing geometries, truly unique views. It rises on a promontory where, on a clear day, the view embraces the coast from Fano to Ravenna. 

Following the archaeological research begun in the spring of 2006, interesting discoveries were made that have allowed updating the relation between the site and historical sources, according to which the castle was built around 1337 on the initiative of Malatesta Guastafamiglia (c. 1299-1364). It is certain that the fortress was already constructed and functioning in 1347, hosting that year the king and queen of Hungary. The castle then remained under the dominance of the Malatesta family until 1458, when the following year Federico di Montefeltro occupied it. Created with functions exclusively defensive, the Castrum Montis Floris was enlarged as a residence around the early half of the XIV century and later restructured and embellished by Sigismondo Pandolfo in the early decades of the XV century. Later events of the castle are very complex, above all concerning the political control of the centre that in the XV-XVI centuries was the object of almost continuous passages of power.

The recent restoration campaign, conducted by the Ravenna Superintendence for the architectonic cultural heritage and the landscape, in collaboration with the Emilia Romagna Superintendence for the archaeological heritage and the Montefiore Local Council, have carried out consolidation work of the entire structure and brought the monumental complex to total fruition, also allowing access to ancient parts previously unreachable. In the space where you are and the next, the flooring was removed to carry out the archaeological excavations. Consequently the excavation activity has brought to light a series of structures linked to the most ancient use of the fortress. 
The archaeological research has brought to light a large quantity of finds, often excellently conserved. Several jugs bear witness to the most ancient glazed majolica of central-northern Italy, to add to fifteenth century majolica and the sixteenth century production of Pesaro and Faenza.  A huge number of glass vessels, mainly glasses and bottles of Venetian production. Coins, work tools and arms are not lacking; but also more prestigious objects like a seal in bronze. 
The variety and the quantity of materials discovered offer a glimpse of the social life of the castle, in its various facets: daily life, the life of the court, the trades and the military activity.

The restorations have also allowed access to areas previously unavailable to the public like, for example, the Salon of the Emperor, where non-religious paintings are conserved, dating to the decade after halfway through the fourteenth century, attributed to the Bologna painter Jacopo Avanzi. Other fragments of his paintings are displayed in the salon and the Throne.  It is also possible to see part of the original cover of the castle, a double-pitched roof, and walk up the long staircase that runs from top to bottom of the building.
